Travel Week
By Rachael Rempel
Our travel week began with a typically long bus ride: The destination… beautiful Flores. Our first sight to see was the Mayan ruins of Tikal. The amazing and intricate temples there took our breath away. That day a group meeting was called and we all anticipated receiving a schedule for the week ahead… but instead, we got the surprise of a lifetime. We were informed that the group would embark on an “Amazing Race”, Outtatown stylestarting NOW! Split into teams called “Marco Polo, Swass, Mama’s Boys, Tortuga, Pan Dulce, and Team Rapido”we were off!
The week that followed was fast paced, adrenaline filled and a totally unique adventure. We raced from city to city, completed tasks, challenges (such as kayak races, fastest bean eating, meal making competition, and cheer-offs), had foot races to the check stops, pushed ourselves hard in a vigorous relay race, chicken fought, and exercised our brains (as well as our muscleslugging around our big bags) with riddles and skill testing questions.
Everyone’s character was challenged and a lot of lessons were learned. I think that we all took something special away from the experience, different for each person. I can honestly say that I am very happy to have been part of it. I can say now that I took part in the 1st annual Outtatown Amazing Race… thus helping to pave the way for future students to enjoy this adventure too. Pretty great huh?
Also, the leaders put so much work into the organizationI’m totally impressed, and we’re all thankful. What a creative and fun way to see this country. I had a blast!
