C.A.S.A.S – Central America Service and Studies
By Leanne Ropp

The week we spent at Sernilla seminary school in Guatemala City with C.A.S.A.S (M.C.C. run program) was one of packed days and a lot of learning. For me it was where I learned the most about the Mayan people and their history, the civil war ‘la violencia’ that lasted 30 years, and the ways these different events still shape the people today. We had a day to see the gaping contrasted between the rich and poor when we visited the cemetery (where even after death, status is extremely evident) and an Americanized mall filled with material-hungry consumers. The most difficult part of the week was attempting to figure out where we fit in, and what God calls us to do with what we learned. We agreed that there is a definite need for awareness, and we can at least take that kind of awareness home with us. We learned that we have much to learn about the world, and this was an impactful beginning.
