and his word better.)

1:30-3:30 Class

3:30-5:30 Free Time / Mentoring / Peer Mentoring Groups

5:30-6:00 Supper

7:00-9:00ish Evening activity

Evening activities are different depending on the night, they are as follows:

Monday: Community Night - We as a team get together and discuss any announcements that might need to be covered, any news with in the group or in the world around us, any concerns in the group that need to be talked about, then we have a time of telling stories, either reflective or humours. We have a time of prayer at the beginning and again at the end. This is a great time for the whole team to reconnect after a weekend of everyone doing there own thing.

Tuesday: Free Night - We use this night to go into town, or just hanging out in the student lounge.

Wednesday: Small Groups - We have three small groups that meet once a week. In these groups we study the Bible, do testimonies, pray, etc. This is an awesome night because we get to know some of the team on a more personal level. We have a blast in our groups hanging out, and getting to know God more by talking about what he is doing in everybody’s life.

Thursday: Worship Night - This night is great! We have a lot of very talented singers and musicians in this group. So every Thursday a different group of three of four people lead us in a worship time. We have an awesome time praising God together and encouraging each other.

Friday: Free Night - We usually get weekends off to do our own thing, unless we are out for a mission’s weekend. If you live close you can go home or if you have relatives you can go visit. Weekends are a great time to kick back and relax.

Recreation: We have an endless supply of activities to do here. Canoeing, kayaking, swimming, beach volleyball, hiking, zip line, leap of faith, etc. The leap of faith was a great way to get us pumped up for bungee jumping in Africa. We had to stand at the top of a pole and jump off. As we jumped we had to try to reach out and grab a trapeze bar, if you missed you would just fall. Don’t worry we were harnessed in, no one got hurt.

Dean is the head administrator of Esperanza. He also talked to us about how we need to approach other people’s culture with an open mind. This way we will learn from them, rather then us wanting them to learn from us.

Description: Soweto is the biggest Black township in all of South Africa. It is also one of the most famous because of the uprisings to protest against Apartheid in 1976. Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela grew up in Soweto, both of which played important roles in the ending of Apartheid. While we were living here we stayed in a community center. This was a great time; it gave us the opportunity to meet a lot of people and experience Black culture hands on. Many of us were taught how to drum, dance, and play new games by the local people that were using the community center. During this week we as a site worked with many different organizations helping out where ever we could. We worked at an orphanage feeding and entertaining kids, painting a local school and gardening at an aids hospice. On the days we were not working we were kept busy touring different areas of Soweto and surrounding areas, all of which were both interesting and heart breaking. The Saturday before leaving for Pretoria we had a blast at Gold Reef City amusement park.

The time we were not in classes we spent getting know our new families. This was a great time for us to build strong friendships and try to learn a new language, Afrikaans.

On the weekend, our host families entertained us. It was amazing to experience their culture hands on.

The team had a chance to grow closer through encouraging and supporting each other. The classroom studies were an interactive workshop on Conflict Resolution. City: Stellenbosch
Location: Christian Brothers Retreat Centre
Dates: Feb. 20 - 26 / 05

Description: This next week was a great mix of work, touristy things and relationship building. We had a couple different work projects this week: painting a mural, paving, and gardening. We did the work projects with our small groups and it created a great time to work together and catch up from the week we spent apart. The touristy thing that we had the opportunity of doing was going on a wine tour. Stellenbosch is world renowned for its many vineyards and wine companies. The girls got to build stronger relationships with each other by staying in a dorm room setting at night. This was awesome because all the girls got to be in one room together, which helped us all to reconnect after being in different homes the week before. The guys were also all together this week, but that happens almost every week for them. It was a great week of work and fun.

City: Bonnievale

The couple days we were there we got to do things like jumping off a big rope swing into a river, canoeing, swimming, and high ropes course, which included a leap of faith and a zip line that took you to the other side of the river. March

Location: U.C.S.A.
Dates: Feb. 28 – March. 5 / 05

Description: Jeffrey's Bay is world renowned among surfers; it has held the world surfing championships and has some of the best waves in the world. After 3 weeks of classes and work projects we got a much needed week off. Some spent it doing the least amount possible, some spent it as busy as possible. February 28 was the much anticipated (for most, anyway) bungee jumping day!! About 24 of the 30 of us bungee jumped, some did a huge zip line also, a few did just one or the other. During the week we had many options of adventure type things to do such as: horse back riding on the beach, surfing lessons, sandboarding, paintball, rock climbing, and shopping. Believe me shopping was an adventure...Quicksilver, Roxy, Billabong, etc...all outlet stores. Great times were had, great clothes were bought. That Friday we had a chance of a life time, we went to a lion park. There, we not only got to see many lions and lionesses, but we got to pet, yes actually touch, 4 month old lion cubs. We were all shocked to find out how big a 4 month old lion really is. Friday night the once in a life time experiences continued, we tented in an elephant park. This was absolutely incredible because in the evening while sitting at the look out, which over looked the watering hole we saw a family of elephants. A family of 7 coming to drink and wash up, Gods creation is truly amazing.

City: Middle of no where
Location: Mdumbi
Dates: March 5 – 11 / 05

" Who are you?" is a big question to try to figure out in one week, but with our tranquil and beautiful surroundings it was easy to feel and experience God’s love. One of the activities we were asked to do was write a personal mission statement to help us have spiritual direction in our lives. Most of us spent a lot of time on the beach, or up early in the mornings to watch the amazing African sun rises.

City: Pietermaritzburg (PMB)
Location: Project Gateway
Dates: March 11 – 18 / 05

Description: In PMB we stayed in an old jail that has been transformed into a historical site that focuses on outreach to the community. While we were there, some of us went abseiling (110m beside a raging Howick Falls) and on a 12 hour hike. For the hike we split into two groups, one group of 15 went at a time. We hiked all day to Rhino’s Peak and slept in a cave at night. This was an incredible time for a lot of us to feel God and truly rely on his strength. While we were not hiking we were having classes on HIV / AIDS, African history, and doing gardening work in the church yard.
