Been there...
Johannesburg |
If the first week was not a big enough shock, the second week was another extreme. We went from poorest of the poor to richest of the rich in a matter of hours. In Pretoria we stayed with families from the Dutch Reformed church. Most of the homes had swimming pools and bedrooms with private toilet and shower....this was quite a luxury compared to the extremes to come... The week was spent learning about the history of apartheid and of the Dutch settlers in South Africa. Our learning took place in different settings, from the classroom to the museums to tours of the historical acetecture in Church Square. The second portion of the week was spent volunteering our time to a local church in Mamelodi. We helped conduct a survey to research the need of the area to find opportunities where programs could be made to make a self sustaining community.
