Cape Town

Back on the big white Elweirda bus to Cape Town. This was our first lengthy overnight road trip on the bus...we made the best of the 16 hours cramped in small spaces. Upon arrival in Mitchelsplain our host families were ready and waiting for a full week emerged in the `coloured´ township. There we were divided into our small groups and then put to work in the gardens of three Methodist churches. By day we sweat and laboured, by night we were given a taste of Cape Town, and it was sweet! There we had our first taste of the beaches on the cold Atlantic ocean...ahhhhhh sand between the toes.

We waved goodbye to the friends we made and then moved farther up the coast to Melkbos Strand. There we spent a week right on the beach, we woke up every morning to the sound of waves crashing into the kelp filled sand. This was also another intense week spent learning about conflict resolution. These sessions were filled with many "uh-huh" moments as we each learned how we approach conflict in our own lives. We met F.W Deklerk (pre-Mandela president) and toured Robbin Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. These two experiences helped shape our understanding of the sacrifices and efforts South Africa has made towards resolution of their past. To unwind we made a trip to the Cricket World Cup, where Canada lost to Kenya, toured the beautiful Table Mountain and swam with sharks.
