Mission, Method, Goals and Core Values

Jam sessionMission

To inspire and nurture students in their life of
discipleship with Jesus Christ... in a journey towards:

  • Knowing God; in truth and relationship
  • Knowing yourself; in personality and character, in abilities and gifts
  • Knowing the world; in its beauty, diversity and pain

Method

The Outtatown Discipleship School is an adventure in unconventional learning. Students learn by experience, instruction and example. They live and travel in various physical settings, from wilderness to inner city, from church basements to summer camps to upscale hotels. They observe extremes of wealth and poverty as well as differences in language and culture as they live in several locations in Canada and the Third World. Through celebration and adventure they learn about God’s joyful and creative nature.Through service, they are challenged beyond their comfort zone and gain new insights about themselves and those they seek to serve.

Mentoring on the beachAlongside those experiences, students receive intensive instruction from a series of instructors who are passionate and gifted in their teaching of the Bible, Christian worldview and spirituality, ethics and relationship, ministry and service. They experience various forms of worship in different congregations, as well as practice their own gifts and abilities in community worship. They are accompanied through the year by experienced and trained Site Leaders who live, study and interact with them. Individual mentoring, small group interaction, personal study, great community life, a supervised learning journal and prayer are important elements of the students’ discipleship journey.

Site Leaders help students to set goals and evaluate their development throughout the year. This is a guided personal journey of faith, adventure and service in community.

While CMU is supported by a wide variety of churches (many of them Mennonite from across Canada,) our students represent some 15 or more Christian denominations from across Canada, the USA and Europe. So this is for any student from any country looking for a rich and diversified experience of adventure, travel and solid Christian studies. We want to send our students back to their home congregations ready to dig in with their whole heart.

  • To strip back layers of culture and religiosity to discover the bedrock of our faith, so that students return to their home churches prepared to serve.
  • To provide an opportunity for students to evaluate their lives and set or confirm strategic goals and direction for their future.
